3. Summary

SUMMARY OF BEST PRACTICE ACTIVITIES

In order to preserve prairie ecosystems and biodiversity and to conserve autochthonous cattle breed, in period 2005-2009 in SNR “Deliblato Sands”, Podolian beef (Hungarian beef) was reintroduced. In this period, 13 Podolian cattle heads were procured.

INNOVATIVE, DEMONSTRATIVE APPROACH – ADDED VALUE

After 30 years of grazing prohibition (since 1970’), by SNR designation act grazing was again allowed in reserve and main reasons for that was loosing of prairie habitats caused by succession of shrubs vegetation. Objective of this project was conserving of prairie ecosystems and biodiversity, conserving of autochthonous cattle breed as well as promotion of eco-ethno tourism and education.

IMPLEMENTATION EXPERIENCE

Project has 2 parallel phases: (1) mechanical cleaning of pastures, and (2) procurement of the cattle heads. Problems during the project implementation were reflected through the intolerant attitude of foresters regarding this idea and derogation of designation act (regarding this) for several years. Also, problems have raised during procurement of the cattle heads because market had weak offer and lot of lacks (heads were in blood kinship, genetic deformed calf).

DECISION PROCESS/REASONS

Main reasons for implementing of such project are: conserving of prairie ecosystems, biodiversity and autochthonous cattle breed, eco-ethno tourism and education and links with other projects (reintroduction of ground squirrel, building of birds feeding places, etc.). Podolian beef has been chose for this project for several reasons: good adaptability to climate conditions, this type of beef require big quantum of biomass of low quality and it was traditional cattle that been breed in Panonia

PARTICIPATION AND CONFLICT SITUATIONS

Main conflicts were reflected in weak acceptance of idea (introducing of agricultural component – cattle raising in forestry area). Problems were overcome by respecting of designation act which prescribe implementation of measures, by inspection control, and by partial financing of the project from the Vojvodina Province and Republic budget.
