This good practice report describes the Bavarian Forest National Park – Department II: Environmental education and Regional Development.

4. Best practice description

INNOVATIVE, DEMONSTRATIVE APPROACH – ADDED VALUE

The NP BF is a leading German NP organization on environmental education in connection with environmental infrastructure. Its main tasks are orientated into work on environmental education. Due to long tradition of visitor management the NP developed the system of trails for hikers and cyclists. The trails are carefully planned according to wildlife and biodiversity data based on monitoring.

IMPLEMENTATION EXPERIENCE

The information and visitor centers’ are at the same time educational institutions and entertainment sites. These facilities also consider themselves as links and make the effort to put the Bavarian Forest across to tourists and visitors. The education visit to the NP BW was a good choice gaining some very good experiences from the educational approach, and environmental facilities. It is one of the aims to bring knowledge and experiences from NP BF to Slovenia.

DECISION PROCESS/REASONS

Educational institution are also consider themselves as links and make the effort to put the Bavarian Forest across to tourists and visitors. Being part of a worldwide net of wildlife sanctuaries, the Bavarian Forest National Park is a place which provides a wide variety of learning opportunities. Binding the environment and people, showing the natural processes and effects, especially to young generations, is a good foundation to arise comprehension in everyday life.

The NP Authority are - approx. 200 employees. The head office is Grafenau. Since 2003 is under the Bavarian State Ministry for Environment and Health.
